Step Inside My House
“Step Inside My House" is the first song Guy Clark ever wrote. Guy wrote the song in 1966 while married to his first wife, Susan Spaw. They lived in an upper duplex at 1548 Castle Court in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood. Although Guy played the song on stage at Sand Mountain Coffee House, The Jester and the Houston Folklore Society events, he never officially recorded it for an album because Guy considered it to be an unfinished song. Other folk singers took up playing the song and passed it around Houston. In the process, the lyrics changed slightly. By the time Lyle Lovett heard it from Eric Taylor, the song was called “Step Inside This House.” It became the title track for Lyle’s 1998 album of songs by Texas songwriters. Even after Lyle recorded it, Guy considered it an unfinished song. From Guy’s basement tapes, here is a rare soundboard recording of Guy singing “Step Inside My House.”
More From The Vaults…
“In 2010 and 2011, Shawn Camp and I produced a tribute album to Guy. The Trishas recorded “She Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” for that album. But while we were in the studio, we had Shawn record several songs during the process before he settled on “Homeless” for the final record. Here is Shawn’s gorgeous version of “She Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.” - Tamara Saviano, Filmmaker
